and in the middle of my screaming and jumping and hearing loss

When you take me by the hand”The first time the Doctor catches Rose singing in the shower it’s this silly Earth song and really, of all the names one could put in a pop song, it had to be Mickey, didn’t it?
He knows she’s in there scrubbing off the dust and grime of Phlaxus V where the planet’s surface structure left them hopping for their lives between the flows of lava after a nasty turnout with the locals. He thinks maybe now she’s scrubbing her neck, shoulders, and then suds slip languidly downwards and he stops that train in its tracks with a shrug of his leather jacket and a huff.
The second time the Doctor catches Rose singing, it’s the same song, but he’s certain his new ears (new hairs in there, after all; new hammer, new cochlea, new auditory nerve, new everything!) have failed him. Despite himself, he follows the sound and strains, but no, he’s certain now: it’s definitely “Doctor” and not “Mickey” in the song’s chorus.
He firmly decides to pretend it never happened.
The third time the Doctor hears Rose singing in the shower, he belts out the chorus along with her and her improved lyrics as he works luscious apple-scented conditioner through her hair in the precise way she’s shown him how so as to not create tangles in the delicate strands. He knows now that not only does she sing in the shower, she also dances a bit. She wiggles her bum in just such a way, and he stops singing. A second later she’s cut off abruptly as his lips devour the last lyrics on her tongue.

The Doctor doesn’t get to bask for long. The horse whinnies again, followed by panicked shouting. The Doctor’s on his feet, stumbling out of the trailer and trying not to trip over his trainers – his body’s buzzing, he’s still running his tongue over his own bottom lip, but as soon as he takes in the scene outside, his haze evaporates in a flash.
They don’t see Russell a lot. The head of the biggest British label in 40 years doesn’t have a lot of time for personally entertaining the talent, even if the Doctor and Rose are more than just that to him.
But when Russell is able to stop by, usually in some random city where he’s got a meeting and they’ve got a gig, it’s always brilliant.
He’s regaling them with tales of the last time he met with Davros’ manager and the bloke’s still reeling and furious from the stunt at the 02 World in Berlin.
Russell’s making elaborate hand gestures, showing the way the guy stood up from the table, threatening him and his mum and every single artist on Gallifrey, but the whole time, his whole speech, his fly is down, and Russell can see his underwear, these dingy little briefs.
The guy doesn’t notice though, making demands — “You’ll give us half your box office for the night!” — and Russell’s laughing and counters with a very precise offering of 8 quid.
“He doesn’t understand,” Russell says, “Why 8 quid? And so I point at his trousers, and I tell him that’s how much some new pants will run him down at Debenhams. He stormed out of the meeting!”
The Doctor’s head falls back in laughter and Rose watches from her chair as Russell seamlessly shifts things back to business.
He’s always got an angle, Russell, every time he visits, and sometimes it’s stuff he’s been quietly cultivating for months, and they just didn’t notice.
“I want you to play Norway again,” he tells them. “To launch the new album. We’ll set up right on that same beach from the first tour and we’ll kick it off as a stunt — as the beginning of something different. You two aging gracefully into a new age of your music together.”
Rose remembers that beach, the way she couldn’t touch the Doctor like she wanted to because they were still just mates.
“We’re in,” she says.
She remembers that beach, and she’s going to snog him on it.
